🦷 GRACEMED DENTAL DAYS ARE COMING THIS MONTH! 🦷

Kansas State Statute 72-6251 requires all students enrolled in Kansas schools to receive a free dental screening each year. In compliance with this requirement, GraceMed will be providing dental screenings for our district.

🪥 Why it matters:
Oral health is an important part of a child’s overall health and plays a critical role in their ability to learn and succeed in school. (Please note that this screening does not replace a regular dental exam with your dentist.)

📄 Consent Information:
• Paper consent forms will be sent home with all students in PreK–8th grade
• High school students wishing to receive extended services must complete the online consent form (link below)
• Passive consent is implied unless the school nurse is contacted
• If you wish to opt out, please complete the back side of the paper form or contact D’ana Heinlein, USD 309 District Nurse

📝 What to expect:
• A copy of the screening results will be sent home with your child
• Screenings require no sign-up
• Families may choose to sign up for expanded care (cleanings, fluoride varnish, sealants) using the online form
• A report will be sent home for any expanded services received

• South Hutch Elementary – Monday, January 26, 2026
• Nickerson Elementary (Nickerson High students will be transported to NES) – Tuesday, January 27, 2026
• Reno Valley Middle School – Wednesday, January 28, 2026

USD 309 is hiring for daycare providers. Immediate positions we have are: One part -time provider, 7:15 am to 10:15 am M-F year round at Nickerson Elementary Daycare. Substitute providers, hours vary, needed at both Nickerson and South Hutchinson Daycares. Starting in August: One full-time provider, 11:30 am to 5:30 pm M-F, year round at South Hutchinson Daycare. Congratulations are in order for retired USD 309 teacher, Mrs. Jacqulyn Ashcraft, as she will be inducted into the Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame, June 7 in Dodge City. USD 309 thanks Mrs. Ashcraft for not only her 38 years of service as teacher in the Nickerson school district, but her continued support for our district as a substitute teacher and volunteer for various extracurricular activities. This is a well deserved honor for an outstanding educator!

Nickerson High School had the honor to have Alexis Smith, Miss Kansas 2024, present to our student body about abusive and unhealthy relationships. Alexis' community service initiative is Respect Reclaimed: Advocating for Healthy Relationships, and she partners with the Wichita Family Crisis Center and the One Love Foundation to educate individuals on recognizing signs of abuse and how important healthy relationships are. Thank you, Alexis, for sharing your story with us. Your story and message have resonated with many of our students!

Week of the Young Child is coming soon, April 14-19. There will many events happening throughout Reno County for young children and their families.

Two USD 309 Schools Receive Statewide Recognition The Challenge Award recognizes schools for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments of students based on the Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) results in math and reading. Both Nickerson Elementary and Reno Valley Middle Schools received this award this week. Congratulations to students and staff! Great Job!!!

Nickerson High School has been recognized as a 2025 All-Star High School! Students at these high schools receive dedicated support in completing college and/or job applications, seeking financial aid, and celebrating all postsecondary pathways. This annual initiative fosters a lasting college-going culture, empowering the school community to champion students' futures!

Students new to NES...Preschool and Kindergarten Roundup is happening Thursday, April 10 @ 6:00. If your preschooler and kindergartener will be new to Nickerson Elementary next year, please plan to attend!
